The Challenge

Xylem has a portfolio of numerous water and energy technology applications with common features such as user management, site management, and asset management. Design and development teams spend redundant effort to replicate such features within each application at the expense of focusing on the unique solutions relative to each product and its user base.

The Vision

The goal of Xylem Cloud is to create and provide a collection of standardized, scalable “feature page” components that can be utilized by all existing and future Xylem web-based applications.

In order to maintain maximum flexibility for product teams utilizing Xylem Cloud, it is imperative that components scale across device types and optimally display only the selected collection of data points relative to a product's unique customer base.
Design and development teams must collaborate to incorporate functional “rules” for how, where, and when certain component patterns will be displayed and must be mindful that “feature pages” are able to coincide within existing architecture frameworks.
From a feature release perspective, iterative design and development will be necessary to allow new content to be added as new APIs become available for consumption.
As feature page components are designed and implemented, patterns should be incorporated into the Xylem Design Language System to influence and set best practice standards for all applications within the Xylem portfolio.

Initial Wireframes and Architecture

With the assistance of the back end development team, existing API endpoints are identified and new API creation efforts are prioritized relative to the frequency of data point occurrence across Xylem applications. High level architecture and basic wireframes containing the most recurring data points are created to provide front and back end development teams with a starting point for an MVP feature page with basic UI patterns to test back end data availability and functionality.

Iterative, Agile Design to Scale

As new APIs are released to production, more data points become available for the Xylem Cloud front end UI to consume and new component patterns are designed and integrated into feature pages. Front end UI is refined to set best practice design standards for Xylem applications.
